Prerequisites
The Continuers' class is designed for anyone who has completed the German With Happy Beginners' course.
If you have learned German elsewhere, perhaps some time ago, then the Continuers' course may well be right for you. You should be more or less familiar with the following:
- The gender of nouns
- The confident conjugation of regular and irregular verbs in the present tense
- The concept of case and specifically the nominative and accusative cases
- Basic vocabulary and phrases (you can get around town and make new friends, for example)
If you're unsure about any of these topics, you may prefer to take the one-term Beginners' course to refresh your memory before joining Continuers the following term.
If you're in doubt I would be delighted to help advise you on the right course for you. Please contact me to discuss!
Course Content
Practical skills
The German With Happy Continuers' course will take you from understanding the basics of German grammar and "travel German" to having real conversations, as well as interacting confidently with a wide variety of reading, TV and audio material.
Grammar
A thorough understanding of German grammar is the key to mastering the language, and taking one step at a time we will move beyond the basics including an understanding of German word order, tenses, separable and inseparable prefix verbs and modal verbs.
Cultural context
As we develop our language skills we will look more closely at German-speaking culture, including history, geography, music, comedy and much more.
As with all my courses, each term we will watch a German-language TV show together, one episode per week. And while you are expected to rely on the subtitles, you will be delighted at how frequently you cry out "I understood that!". With your friendly tutor as a tour guide, you'll uncover fascinating insights into the culture of Germany and her neighbours.
The Fun Way
By the time you reach Continuers' you'll have made firm friends with your classmates and classes are all the more fun for it. Of course, there will be the humour, music, food and plenty of other experiences that make German With Happy a truly unique social and educational experience.
Next steps
Students will usually stay in the Continuers' level for approximately four terms (one year). The content will be a mixture of material that is suitable for those who have just completed Beginners' as well as those who have spent several terms in Continuers'.
After achieving a baseline of necessary grammar and fluency, students will be individually invited to take up the challenge of the Intermediate-level class with more advanced grammar and deeper conversation.
Finding the right course for you
For all courses other than Beginners', I encourage interested students to drop me a line to discuss their experience and find the right home for them.
